In the winter of 2011/12 I will be focusing on the last sail powered fishing fleet in Europe; the river Fal oyster dredgers of Cornwall. These men work long tough hours for little financial reward.
This deeply romantic and sustainable fishing fleet is steeped in history and under constant threat from bureaucrats. The fleet represent a fascinating dichotomy; the fish stocks are dwindling and so is their way of life, but have we gone so far down the road to mechanisation that de mechanisation is the only sustainable way forward.
When is a way of life truly obsolete in the face of constant modernisation? As an artist in pursuit of meaning, I will physically pursue this dying breed; More of this in the future.
